Key Concepts: How Age Is Calculated

Gregorian calendar arithmetic — The standard method subtracts the birth year from the current year, then adjusts by −1 if today's month/day is before the birthday. This gives age in completed years.

Months and days remainder — After extracting full years, the leftover months are counted from the birthday month to the current month, and leftover days from the last birthday day to today. Because months have 28–31 days, this is not simply division.

Leap year handling — February 29 birthdays are treated as March 1 in non-leap years for the purpose of computing the birthday boundary, following the convention used in US and EU law.

Total days formula — The most accurate figure. Counts each calendar day individually, including all leap years between birth and today. The result is used when you need precise elapsed time, such as interest accrual on a loan or clinical trial duration.
