What Is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator finds the tip amount, total bill, and per-person share based on your bill total, tip percentage, and party size. It removes the mental math from the table so you can focus on the conversation — and leave confident you’ve tipped appropriately without overpaying or underpaying.

The formula is simple: Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ Number of people. This calculator handles all three steps instantly.

How to Use This Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount (before or after tax, your choice — see tip below).
  2. Enter or select the tip percentage.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. See the tip amount, total bill, and per-person share instantly.

Worked Example: $85 Dinner for Four at 20%

Tip %Tip AmountTotal BillPer Person (4)
15%$12.75$97.75$24.44
18%$15.30$100.30$25.08
20%$17.00$102.00$25.50
25%$21.25$106.25$26.56

The difference between a 15% and 20% tip on an $85 bill is just $1.06 per person in a group of four — a small amount that makes a meaningful difference to your server.

Should You Tip on the Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional standard and what most etiquette guides recommend — the tax goes to the government, not to service quality. However, tipping on the post-tax total is increasingly common because it’s simpler and the difference is small (on a $100 bill with 8% tax, it’s about $1.60 on a 20% tip).

Either is acceptable. This calculator lets you enter whichever total you prefer.

Tips for Splitting the Bill Fairly

  • Split evenly by default: Simplest and avoids awkward itemization for most groups.
  • Round up generously: When splitting, round each person’s share up to the nearest dollar — it gives the server a slightly better tip and eliminates change hassle.
  • Add tip before splitting: Calculate the tip first, then divide the total. Don’t let each person calculate their own tip separately.
  • For unequal orders: Use itemized splitting apps or have everyone pay their portion plus the proportional tip and tax.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tipping

What is 20% of a $47 bill?

$47 × 0.20 = $9.40 tip. Total = $56.40. Quick mental math: 20% = double the 10% ($4.70 × 2 = $9.40).

Is it rude not to tip?

In the US, tipping is a strong social norm and much of a server’s income depends on it due to tipped minimum wage laws. In other countries (Japan, for example), tipping can be considered rude. Check local customs when traveling.

Do you tip on the total including tax?

Both are acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is traditional; tipping on the post-tax total is common and simpler. The difference is typically just a dollar or two on most bills.

How do I calculate a tip for a large group?

Many restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity for groups of 6 or more. Check the bill before adding an additional tip. If not included, calculate the tip on the total, then divide by the number of people.
